“Brynduraz” my mentor gasped through his bright red dwarven beard. Dvalin was Odin's master blacksmith and he did not waste time with courtesy, manners, or calling a person by their given name. Like him, I was one of Ivaldi's sons. Today that did not matter. I was still the apprentice and there was important work to be done. He nodded to a loose stone in the corner of the room under the forge. I knew what he needed so I hurried to the treasure hoard for another pouchful of the blue crystal that had made our weapons the favorite of the Einherjar.
"Skidladnir" was the name Dvalin had given to the ship we crafted for Freyr. "Gungnir" was the name of our current project. Dvalin would also grumble words like "Grong" or "Makaz" when he would send other apprentices scurrying after particular tool, however everyone knew he was talking to me when he called "Brynduraz". In one sense it was a very fitting nickname.
The precious gem brynduraz is merely an ornamental material unless it has been handled properly. The most skilled rhunki could imbue it with specific dwarven runes and the gem would function as a resevoir to carry the magic. Ironically rhunki were becoming as scarce as the gem. Three of these runesmiths who had worked with Dvalin disappeared mysteriously while they were delivering these mythical weapons to their terrestrial owners. Well.....make that four.
There was something that the craftsmen of Asgard did not understand. Brynduraz can be polarized when it is exposed to the right energy fields (ie power cosmic), much like iron blocks can be permanently transformed into magnets under the proper circumstances. The field that is generated has positive and negative poles much like a starndard magnet , however the forces operate across space and time. Once a peice of brynduraz has been charged, it can act upon other fragments of charged brynduraz and push or pull them from one space to another, from one time to another, or even from one dimensional reality to another.
I am lucky. I only suffered a few "trips" or "jolts" before I found myself inside the hull of the critical mass , a brynduraz laden cosmic trawler. Before that I spent years with a group of travelling dawi who used brynduraz heirlooms to effectively summon and communicate with ancestors. Then I was jolted to a land of many peoples called Antonica. Here I discovered the psychic universe from 3 elgi in castleview hamlet. My longest jolt almost killed me while testing my resourcefulness. Ultimately I was on the winning side of a civil war between forest dwelling savages and learned enough about their culture to understand their shamanic star charts.
I never quite understood why i seemed to be the only person who was being jolted from reality to reality. I would wake up naked and disoriented with a pile of my brynduraz trinkets and other brynduraz fragments beside me, no other belongings. My final jolt onto the critical mass helped me undestand.
When charged pieces of brynduraz attract or repel each other they do not effect other materials. (Simliar to how a magnetic field has no effect on wood) I quickly realized that the majority of my shipmates on the critical mass were dwarven miners or craftsmen. Trum'Baroll , a dwarf who showed me around my new home, explained that the brynduraz I handled daily had penetrated into my blood. This made my body susceptible to the same interdimensional forces. He bragged , "Generally dawi are the only beings rugged enough to mine this rare gem and our weaponsmiths seem to have the most skill at forming the gems without destroying them. This is why our comrads are fellow dwarves."
I hid my surprise as i was introduced to a variety of peoples including zabrak, half elves, a minotaur, and a tall camino who kept track of the ship's finances. All of them had the mark. This tatoo was an additional deposit of brynduraz dust in blue bands around the head and torso would help to ensure we would all jolt together if we had to ride a cosmic wave.
"The beams and panels of the critical mass were also designed with jolts in mind. Of course this had not been tested. The large mass of brynduraz in the hull of the ship in addition to the large amount in your body and the amount in the blood of the rest of us collectively should anchor us in this reality" Trum'Baroll laughed, "Even the children born on this vessel have the mineral in their blood AND bones. We call ourselves brynkuli. We are becoming a new type of dwarf both physically and culturally......Well here are your quarters, not as cozy as a khaz but I think you will like it."
All I could do is nod.
" By the way , what is your name?.......well?"
....In a cloudy stream of consiousness I could hardly remember the red dwarven beard and a familiar face. I could hear the clanging of hammers on the anvil.
"Well !" Trum'baroll insisted.
Then it came to me, "My mentor called me Brynduraz"
Trum'Baroll smiled, "'Tis a very fitting name. Scanners tell us you have more in your fist than most of us have in our entire body. Welcome Aboard"
And so another chapter in my saga will begin............
